Years ago, I read a wonderful book, "How to Unplug the Christmas Machine." The premise was to stretch out the celebrating of Christmas, but condense the preparations. The theory being, and I think it's correct, that children today have a huge lead-in to a one frantic gift-opening morning. And, then they are adrift in a pile of ripped wrapping, asking, "Is that ALL?!?!?"
To help our children celebrate the season for more than a few days at most, we tried, and actually occasionally succeeded, in celebrating St. Nicholas Day. It also helped our children understand the origins of Santa Claus, so there was no confusion later on.
My daughter, the mother of two sweet girls, has longed to continue the tradition and make special stockings for them, but has been overwhelmed with chronic fatigue. So, to help her out, I made the stockings and gathered a few items to give her a head start.
I am really happy with how they turned out---I wanted a non-traditional, a little girly, and mostly fun look about them. I think the rhinestones help!

Bravo Grandma! Very cute, indeed. We are getting ready for St. Nicholas Day too and having a jolly good time of it. We do the advent calendar with readings daily too, with some sort of treat that helps us focus our attention on tasting as seeing the goodness of the Lord. I LOVE this season!
Adorable stockings...of course!
Oh what a wonderful idea . . . and what beautiful stockings. These will be cherished for years to come, I know! I love hearing about other families' traditions.
